The 2014 We Care Golf Classic
The We Care Golf Classic is being held October 14, 2014 at Wakefield Plantation, part of the McConnell Golf group. Wakefield Plantation is a beautiful golf course, designed by multiple PGA Tour winner Hale Irwin. The course features multiple amenities that are synonymous with the McConnell Golf group’s golf clubs, and is situated in the outskirts of Raleigh, North Carolina.
The We Care Golf Classic is an event that is packed full of laughs and good times. It’s a golf tournament where guests can meet and mingle with service men and women who can set aside, for the moment, the stresses of military life. After the round of golf, a dinner and auction are held to raise money for various causes. It’s a day that many won’t forget!
“To see this level of support, this is why we fight, because people appreciate us. It’s why we continue to put our lives on the line. It validates what we’ve done and what we’ve been through.” Staff Sgt. Dale Beatty
The We Care Golf Classic is presented by the Wakefield Senior Men’s Golf Association (WSMGA). This wonderful group of people have banned together to show their support for the sacrifices that service men and women have made. The WSMGA have done a lot of work for military in the past including sending care packages to active military personnel year after year. One day they began talking and realized they needed to be doing something bigger and better to help and support the military. This is how the We Care Golf Classic came to be. All of the proceeds from the event go towards three wonderful projects that each have their own great causes; The Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund, the USO at RDU International Airport, and the WSMGA We Care Scholarship Fund.
One of the main beneficiaries for the event is Soldiers and Airmen Assistance Fund (SAAF). The SAAF is a non-profit organization that has the mission of providing financial support to Army and Air Guard families coping with unusual or unpreventable hardships. Army and Air National Guardsman are unique in that they willing lay aside their civilian careers and leave their families when called by their state and nation. Over 20,000 North Carolina Guardsman have been deployed since 2001 and this is where the SAAF becomes involved. What’s so unique about this program is that they are the only non-profit organization in North Carolina that provides financial assistance solely to the families of the North Carolina National Guard. They do not receive any government assistance whatsoever and since 2004, they have provided over $1.2 million dollars to National Guard families.
The USO at RDU International Airport is another recipient of proceeds from the We Care Golf Classic. The USO at RDU International Airport serves active duty military members, their families and retired military service members who are traveling through the airport. RDU is THE main hub for travel, with approximately 2,000 service members a month passing through on their way to North Carolina’s six major bases. THE USO does an outstanding job at bring comfort to all that travel. They provide computers with internet access, complimentary snacks and beverages, over-sized recliners and large screen TV’s to pass the time. For those with children they also provide private changing rooms along with a children’s play area. It’s a small way to show “thanks”, but the USO provides a welcoming oasis away from the grueling travel and uncertain futures. Another interesting note about the USO is that is funded strictly through contributions from the public and is staffed entirely by volunteers.
Another beneficiary of the event is the WSMGA We Care Scholarship Fund. This fund provides academic scholarships to deserving children of North Carolina service personnel.
As you can see there’s a theme to the beneficiaries of these three fine organizations. They all rely on the public and the greater good of mankind to “pay it forward”. This is where the golf community excels. Golfers tend to be giving people who look out for one another and this great charitable event is no exception. We are truly grateful for their service to our country and for their sacrifices so we may maintain our freedom and way of life.
