The 2017-18 PGA Tour season is well underway this fall. Although many of the game’s top stars take well-deserved breaks, some of your favorite TaylorMade staffers have competed well. Let’s take a look at these player performances as well as some exciting product launches.
Even casual golf fans know Justin Rose. The English veteran has a major and gold medal among his 17 career international victories. His 2017-18 season has gotten off to an exciting start, coming from behind to win back-to-back events.
At the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, put together a respectable score after 3 rounds. However, his 9-under total put him 8 shots back of fellow TaylorMade staffer, Dustin Johnson, who was cruising at that point. After an even-par front 9 on Sunday, Rose charged back with an inward 31. He ended up winning by 2 shots over Johnson, Henrik Stenson, and Brooks Koepka. Given the result, it’s no surprise to find out he led the field in birdies for the week. It seems he’s enjoying his new “Rose Proto” irons.
The following week was more of the same from Rose. On Sunday at the Turkish Airlines Open, Rose battled playing partner Nicolas Colsaerts down the stretch. The pair traded blows while attempting to hold off Padraig Harrington, playing behind them, and Dylan Frittelli in front. Tied on the last hole, Rose and Colsaerts stuck their approach shots within 10 feet. Rose sunk his birdie putt, giving him a 1-shot lead. After Harrington failed to hole out from the fairway on the 72nd hole, Rose officially earned back-to-back wins.
“It’s like a bus, you wait ages for one and then two turn up at once” – Justin Rose
We move from veteran to rookie Beau Hossler. Earning his card for the 2017-18 season, Hossler finished T10 at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, MS. For the tournament, he finished T5 in driving distance using his 2017 M2 driver. He also hit 70% of GIR using a combo set of TaylorMade irons (RSi TP UDI 4 & 5, PSi Tour 6-9).
Hossler followed that up with another solid performance in Las Vegas at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Tied going into the last round, he ended up finishing T7, 2 shots out of a playoff. Hossler’s early results this season will certainly keep expectations high for the young man.
New Product Launches
There are 2 launches we want to highlight this month, one software and one equipment. We begin with the software.
TaylorMade teamed up with electronics titan, Samsung, launching myRoundPro. This stats analysis program is compatible with Samsung Gear devices (S2, S3, Gear Fit2, Gear Fit2 Pro) and on your phone. With the free app, you can:
- Record scores and putts
- Get a summary of your stats after the round
- Assign clubs to each shot so you know how far you hit that club
- Track strokes gained, proximity to the hole, club distance gaps, fairways and greens in regulation
When you use the app on your phone, GPS gives you detailed yardages to any point on the hole. You don’t need your phone to use the app though. Samsung Gear devices give you yardages to front/middle/back of the green, as well as keep stats.
For golfers that use technology on the course and want to get more in-depth stats on their game, myRound Pro is perfect.
In regards to new TaylorMade equipment, we must mention the new P730 irons. These pure blades are designed for superior ball strikers that demand control and consistency from their clubs. Three of TaylorMade’s staff players are gaming these beauties now. Dustin Johnson recently joined Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose in putting them into play. For more on these irons, check out our recent review.
Until next time…
